APCC's Community Fair

Although All Peoples Community Center has been solving problems of education, health, and poverty for the people of South Los Angeles since 1942, in recent years health education and the importance of early disease detection and healthy living have become more of an emphasis. As part of the overall program to provide both health education and health resources, on March 24 All Peoples Community Center sponsored the 15th Annual Community Resource, Health & Book Fair, an event that provides important health services to our neighbors as well as access to information from a number of other agencies and the opportunity to purchase books from Scholastic Publishing - and let's not forget the food that was served and the many activities for children!

In all, 449 people benefited from the hard work of various agencies whose staff were on site to greet and share with our neighbors. Among the services offered were 80 vision screenings courtesy of the Lions Club; 200 dental screenings by Washington Dental; and 39 comprehensive health evaluations by our friends from California Hospital, including blood pressure testing, glucose testing, hemoglobin testing, and BMI (Body Mass Index) measurement. They also administered forty immunizations.

This year's event was made possible by the efforts of ninety-eight workers representing 42 agencies as well as 122 volunteers, most of whom were parents, youth, and other clients of the Center. A heart-felt "thank you" to everyone who contributed, and especially to the staff of All Peoples Community Center, A Place Called Home and the Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD), and to our sponsors: Councilwoman Jan Perry (District 9), LISC-Sustainable Communities, Central Avenue Business Association, US TOW, and the LAPD Newton Division.

Feeding Families

The Supplemental Food Program represents one of many important ways that All Peoples impacts the community. Individuals and families in the community receive a bag of groceries, including fresh fruits and vegetables, each month to supplement their existing food supply. Participants in the program also receive information about other community resources for feeding their families and assistance with accessing those resources.
